MIECO CHIPBOARD PLANT NO.3 AT PADANG TENGKU
We
have secured a heavy lifting project to lift and erect one (1) unit 7mØ
x37m long dryer drum weighted 378mt at MIECO Chipboard plant No.3 in Padang Tengku,
Pahang. Our scope of service includes initial stage of engineering consultancy,
planning for the lifting, monitoring and managing all aspects of the lift to get
the dryer drum onto 12 meters height foundation. We also supplied an experienced
team, an extensive selection of lifting tackles and man basket to secure and release
the lifting tackles.
We had earlier proposed to use multiply
cranes lift method (two (2) units 300 Tons Truck Crane & two (2) units 150
Tons Crawler Crane) to carry out the job. However the working area for four (4)
units crane was not made available due to the client would like to speed up their
construction schedule and to construct the transformer room, and erect other equipment
next to the dryer drum erection area which was supposed to hold until completion
installation of the dryer drum.
Our engineering department was called in again to
restudy the lifting method to design and construct a special "Lifting Frame"
7m width x 21m long with 400mt SWL to use a single crane to lift the dryer drum.
This lifting frame was designed to prevent damages and bending force on the shell
of the dryer drum during lifting.

300mm tolerance clearance on both sides for the dryer drum to fit into final foundation |

Our later proposal was to use a
600 Tons Ringer Crane (Manitowoc 4600 S4 Ringer S3) with 180ft boom, 400 Tons
ringer counterweight, 55 Tons standard counterweight to lift this dryer drum.
This crane had to dismantle into pieces and sections which eventually required
80 loads of heavy low loaders and trailers to be transported from Teluk Ramunia,
Johor and traveled 550 km on the road to the jobsite. The Ringer Crane foundation
was prepared with R.C. pilling and crusher stone back filling and compaction where
the crane was set up on top of timber mat.
Due to the space
constraint, the crane had to be rigged up according to our rigging drawing in
order to have the boom and tail swing clear away from all the surrounding objects.
The crane can only swing 180 degrees. Once the crane rigged up, a final check
had to be carried out by our supervisors and DOSH officers prior to the lifting
of the dryer drum.
The dryer drum had to be lifted over 14
meters height column. During the lifting, we need to ensure the steel structural
and hopper is spaced within the tolerance of not more that 300mm on each side.
The project went smoothly in not more than one hour and the dryer drum was lifted
and placed onto the 12 metres height foundation with the assistance of the rigging
crews to align the final position of the dryer drum.
The contract
took a huge amount of expertise, planning, design and preparation. The project
is completed so well due to the excellent teamwork of all the concerned parties.
